Documentary Opening 1: (Worst roommate)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

The thumbnail shows a blond lady with an expressionless face whos not wearing any makeup. Next to her says the title “worst roommate ever” This gives an impression that the picture of the lady shown is a mugshot.

I expect that the documentary will narrate the criminal offenses that she's done. The look of lack of empathy creates an impression that she's not a good person.

Because this is a true crime documentary, i expect that the narrator will be the roommate of the lady in the thumbnail that has survived an attempt of torture or homocide of some sort.

Give one example of each and explain the meaning:

  • Camera:

  • Mise-en-scène:

  • Editing:

  • Sound:

I think the target audience would be teenagers to adult true crime lovers as the documentary follows a conventional documentary in terms of narration, visual and sound effects such as

Cameras being medium shot and close up serving purpose of showing the audience small details such as facial expressions, or bruises

zooming in, handheld serving the purpose of making the documentary a more immersive experience for the audience.

Mise en scene such as dark lighting and lack of color creates a gloomy, tense and scary atmosphere,

cuts and bruises as well as hospital equipments from pictures shown gives the audience a picture of what happened to the narrator, raising questions and curiosity

Many cuts were used, especially when switching from one image to another. They were used to create a dark atmosphere as they relate to each other. Theres also flashbacks which makes the documentary be more immersive for its audience

For sounds, there was creepy music and sound effects that was used in order to intensify the documentary and engage the audience.

Documentary Opening 2: (What Jennifer did)

Before You Watch

Look only at the thumbnail and title.

  • What are your expectations for the documentary?

  • What are the connotations of the image, font, colour, or title?

  • What do you expect to see or hear in the opening?

The picture shown in the thumbnail accompanied by the title “what jennifer did” gives the audience an impression that she has done something bad

The color of the picture is monochrome and red, which gives a symbol of evil. The quality of the picture was also bad and old, which gives a creepy atmosphere.

Half of the picture in the thumbnail was also a mugshot which tells the audience, giving them a hint that the person in the thumbnail has committed a crime, and judging from how it is all set up, it is safe to assume that it would be a violent crime.

I expect to see a person committing a violent crime, possibly related to murder.
